I had a good day fishing from shore, caught two halibut, one a keeper about 24 inches, the other was less than 22 inches. The smaller one, I tried to shake him off at my feet but he ended up taking my lure with him. Darn! I like to make sure the lures are removed safely from their mouths, and so I don't lose them. No problem, the halibut ends up spitting out the lure by shaking it's head. They have bony mouths with lots of softspots in between, and that is one reason they are so darn hard to catch. If you let the line go slack for just an instant, the halibut does his infamous head shake, the hook pops out, and he is gone.
The water was rough again today, lots of wind swell. I was contemplating on getting on my board and fishing but the sets were a little too big with too short of intervals. By the time I combed the beach on foot, it was getting late, and I was tired. I saw a lot of life from shore; saw two monterous shovelnose sharks in the surf line probably weighing in at 50 to 60 lbs each. One of them came up to my feet, so I used the tip of my pole to touch him. He sped off like a bat out of hell! Hehe.
There were other guys fishing off the beach using spinning tackle. They were pulling in a lot of small halibut, croakers, corbina, etc. All of them were safely released. Beautiful fish. Lots of fish.
